What ever happened to PM Dawn ?

PM Dawn

PM Dawn consisted of two brothers Attrell Cordes (a.k.a. Prince Be, born May 15, 1970) and Jarrett Cordes (a.k.a. DJ Minutemix, born July 17, 1971) who became very popular in the 1990’s with their smooth sounds, which mixed hip-hop and classic soul with contemporary pop music and their trippy lyrics. They are best known for their 1991 hit song called “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss.”

George Brown, a founding member of Kool & the Gang, helped to raise the Cordes brother with their mother. Prince Be used the money he made from DJing and his after school job as a security guard at a homeless shelter, to pay for studio time as PM Dawn.

They released their first single called “Ode to a Forgetful Mind” in 1989 with an independent record label called Warlock in the USA, but it went unnoticed. The record label, Gee Street Records, had better success releasing the track in the UK. This does not come as a surprise to me because of the style. They did not have that hardcore hip hop sound that works in the USA market.

In 1991, they released their debut album called “Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross” which featured the international hit “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss.”

Early in 2005, Prince Be suffered a stroke, which paralyzed the left side his body. Later that year, still recovering from his stroke, PM Dawn appeared on the NBC show called “Hit Me, Baby, One More Time” where five former pop stars sing their biggest hits along with a cover version of a contemporary hit, with the winners getting $20,000 to donate to a charity of their choice. They performed “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” and covered Puddle of Mudd’s “Blurry”. They won the $20,000 charitable prize, which they donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as Prince Be is a diabetic.

On February the 12th, 2009, Prince Be had a second stroke and suffered a gangrenous infection in his right leg. As a result of this infection, his leg had to be amputated below the kneecap in December 2009.

DJ Minutemix supposedly tried to start a solo career, but I can’t seem to find anything about him.
