After listening to the track called “Royals” sang by Lorde, a young talented New Zealander, it got me thinking about two other bands from New Zealand that I really like.
Let’s starts with Lorde.
This 17 year old singer, whose real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, became the first New Zealand solo artist to have a number one song in the United States with “Royals”. Her lyrics are written using contemporary references, but it reminds me of the good quality lyrics with real messages or stories, which seems to be a lost art nowadays, if you listen to some of the most popular tracks on the charts today.
Then there is Fat Freddy’s Drop.
They are a seven-piece band that plays a combination of Dub, Reggae, Soul, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues. They were originally a jam band and you can clearly hear that they’ve kept the jamming vibes when they perform their music. Below is the song called “Midnight Marauders” that gained international recognition in 2003 and was re-distributed by record labels and DJs in Germany.
And my all time favorite band is Ardijah.
I discovered this band while partying at the 36 year old Club Galaxy in Cape Town in the 1990’s and 2000’s. Their track called “Silly Love Songs” was one of my favourite Jazz anthems and was released in 1999. They were initially a cover band, formed in 1979. In 1986, they released their first single and the rest is history.
