Early in November, I attended the prestigious Wesley’s Tobacconist Cigar Dinner at Katzy’s Cigar Lounge in Rosebank. The cigar dinner is hosted by Mr and Mrs Wesley. Mr Colin Wesley opened the first Wesley’s Tobacconist store in 1971 in the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg.
I attend my first Wesley’s Cigar dinner 12 years ago, and back then, it was already a well established cigar event in Johannesburg.
The evening always consists of the enjoyment of a three course meal and three cigars.
Below are the cigars we enjoyed that evening.
The De Hertogh Wilde Senorita, is a superb hand-finished short filler cigar from a traditional manufacturer in Belgium. The filler is a blend of leaves: Cuban (for spiciness), Java (for richness), Maduro Brazil (for mellowness), Sumatra (for smoothness).
Followed by La Aurora Principe Petit Corona Maduro – (112mm x Ring 35), which is from the oldest cigar manufacturing company in the Dominican Republic, a slender hand-rolled cigar with a Dominican filler, an Indonesian binder and rich Indonesian Maduro wrapper.
Montecristo Double Edmundo (155mm x Ring 50) launched in 2013 and was one of the top 25 cigars in Cigar Aficionado in 2014.
“With gorgeous colour, hints of oak and leather, the cigar seems to get better with each puff, culminating in a chocolately finish.” – Cigar Aficionado
“Don’t be fooled by the large size. This is a mild cigar with a delicate creamy flavor. You have to pay attention … … (or) you will miss the joy” – Top Cubans website
These Wesley cigar dinners usually only happen 3 to 4 times per year, which makes it a very sought-after event, with tickets always selling out very quickly. If you want to stand a chance of going to their next event, you should register for their newsletter via their website.
