I was not impressed with the first episode of “Lip Sync Battle Africa”.
I felt that Pearl Thusi was trying too hard to speak with her bad attempt at an American accent. After video editing “Tropika Island Of Treasure” season 6, with Pearl as the presenter, and having to watch hours of raw footage of her delivering her links, I am more than qualified to make this observation.
As much as this is an American format show, I feel it is important to add a real South African flavour to it. Pearl’s normal speaking accent is more than fine for the show and she does not need to do this American twang at all.
The behind the scenes rehearsal and wardrobe space of the SA version looks like a third world version compared to the amazing looking ones in season 1 & 2 of the American show. I know that television production budgets have decreased over the past few years, but the rehearsal and wardrobe space plays a big part in whetting the viewers’ appetites and increases the excitement and anticipation of the second performance. They can’t show us an empty room with chairs, like they did in episode 1.
I was impressed with Casper’s “Whitney” performance, as he did pull off the “Whitney on drugs” look very well.
Let’s hope the next two comedians in this week’s episode are more entertaining than the first one.
Comedy heavyweights Jason Goliath and Tol A$$ Mo go up against Celeste Ntuli and Nina Hastie as two comedy tag-teams engage in the first double contest of the Lip Sync Battle Africa (MTV, DStv channel 130, 20:50 CAT, 28 April 2016).
It’s the ultimate battle of the sexes as MTV pits boys versus gals, with one third of comedy trio Goliath & Goliath teaming up with the #YouGotGot host to go head to head against “Queen of Comedy” Celeste Ntuli and her feisty team-mate Nina Hastie.
No stone is left unturned as the funnymen and women bring it in a bid to out-sync, out-dance and generally up-stage the competition in what must be the funniest outing yet of the hit show.
Hosted by Pearl Thusi with colourful commentary from ‘koko master’ and Afrobeat star, D’Banj, Lip Sync Battle Africa has previously witnessed epic battles between Cassper Nyovest and Boity Thulo, and Thando Thabethe and Lerato Kganyago.
